Hostages

I have an honest to God question today. The question is: Do you really have trouble taking your children out of school for appointments? I don't mean trouble like someone isn't happy about it. I mean trouble as in consequences for your child.

I have Moms calling here all the time saying that their child CANNOT leave school as in the school won't let them leave. Are our children being held hostage without us knowing it until we try to break them out? I am not getting it. Are we even aware of what the consequences are? If there are any at all?

Here's how one conversation went:

Mom: She cannot miss school.
Me: Or what?
Mom: What do you mean, or what?
Me: What will happen if she misses?
Mom: I have no idea.

Hmmm. Interesting.

I understand if your child struggles with school that YOU don't want them to miss anything. That's fine. But are the schools truly unwilling to let our children out?

As I have mentioned before, I have 3 kids. I have never once had a problem getting them out of school. I have never had a problem with them getting the work that they missed. I just don't get it.

Again, sports coaches...you are the worst. There's more to life than your team.

I am really interested in your feedback here so bring it on.

PS--If you read me all the time on Facebook, please consider following my blog (click on "Follow" at the top of my blog page) and leaving comments there too. Thanks!

  1. You need to come down to Florida, We don't have any push back from the school when you need to take you kids out, things are a little more laid back out of NY :)

  2. Our high school (regular public school) is very strict about absences regardless of whether they are "excused" or not. If you miss more than nine classes (sick day, dr/ortho appointment, choose to attend a presentation by a visiting college, etc.), you go to the principal and they get to judge whether you will fail the class, even if you have an A. So, I have to say I understand the concern.

  3. That is pretty strict--I think when I was in high school you got in trouble if you missed 19 classes. 9 classes is kind of a lot I guess. Sometimes it is really bizarre!

  4. It is really crazy, I agree! And I get so mad when people don't keep their sick teens home and instead they cough all over mine and then mine get sick. Of course, I keep mine home and then they miss class! Oh, well, just one of my peeves ;-).
